If you are serious about purchasing a quality treadmill, and not
some toy that will break down in a short period of time, then
there are a number of considerations to think about. One of the
most important is the quality of the motor.

A treadmill motor is one of the most significant components to
consider when buying a treadmill. It is what drives the
treadbelt that you walk or run on. Depending on the quality and
power it can make the difference between a smooth running
machine and a loud noise maker that struggle to run.

In most cases the larger and heavier the motor the better. But
that is not always the case. The quality of the motor can make a
big difference, even if it is smaller. In other words not all
treadmill motors are equal.

When comparing treadmill motors you want to go by the horsepower
of the continuous duty, not peak horsepower. Peak horsepower is
the maximum horsepower a treadmill can reach. Continuous-duty
horsepower is a measure of sustained power during regular use.
The continuous motor power is what is consistently delivered
during heavy usage over an extended period of time. Since peak
horsepower is usually significantly higher than a motor’s
continuous capability, continuous horsepower better helps you
determine which treadmill will accommodate your intended
exercise use. Generally speaking, the larger the motor the more
powerful it can operate at a continuous rate

Continuous duty is the standard in comparing horsepower.
Unfortunately there is no official standard rating and often
treadmill manufacturers will exaggerate the actual continuous
duty horsepower. Regardless, the continuous duty horsepower
rating will give you some guideline, but it is not an absolute.

An indication of the quality of the motor will often be
reflected by the extent of the warranty. A 90 day warranty will
suggest lack of quality. A warranty of 5 years or more tells you
that the motor is built to last, or otherwise the company would
go broke having to replace them. In fact, there are a number of
treadmill manufacturers that offer lifetime warranties on the
motor. We suggest the following continuous duty horsepower when
selecting a treadmill. If you are over 200 lbs you may want to
add a .5 hp to the motor level:

Walking	- 2.0 continuous duty HP+

Jogging	- 2.5 continuous duty HP+

Running	- 3.0 continuous duty HP+

Be especially careful when you purchase a treadmill under
$1,000. Below that price you will have manufacturers skimp on
the quality of components in order to keep the price down. When
you purchase from a reputable manufacturer the chances of the
motor breaking down are slim. When you buy an inferior treadmill
the chances of the motor burning out increases substantially.

So you’re excited about buying a treadmill. You’re looking forward to having a premium piece of fat-burning equipment available to you 24-7 at your convenience.Rain, snow, sleet or hail, it doesn’t matter because you’ll be able to workout anyway! But wait a minute – there’s so many treadmill brands to choose from! And why are there so many differences of opinion? If you’ve read many treadmill reviews in your search for the best treadmill you may have ended up a little confused:One person swears by their Proform treadmill; another says it’s a piece of junk. One expert loves Nordic Track; another expert wouldn’t touch it with a 10 foot pole. How are you supposed to make a smart decision with so many conflicting reviews? To help you out, here are the top 3 things to keep in mind when reading treadmill reviews:#1) Consider this: It’s just ONE PERSON’S opinion.People have different opinions on everything from movies to ice cream to cars to cities. Someone prefers Honda to General Motors. Another person prefers Dell over IBM. That doesn’t mean that one thing is necessarily better than another, it just means somebody has a preference for it. So just because you really want to buy a Landice and one person may not agree with you doesn’t make it a bad buy for you.Keeping an open mind is always a good thing and listening to other’s peoples’ reasoning behind their decision can help you with your purchase. But in the end it’s your choice and it’s YOUR opinion that matters. Just because somebody doesn’t like what you like, that doesn’t mean you are going to make a bad decision. If your treadmill has everything YOU need, then that’s what’s important.#2) Consider this: Who’s writing the review?I’ve read so many ‘user reviews’ on treadmill websites that are clearly NOT written by a normal treadmill buyer. The lingo smacks of a treadmill salesperson. And while I’m not making any accusations here, when a treadmill buyer writes something like: “Let’s look at the features of the ABC treadmill and see what they mean to you…”or “The XYZ treadmill offers an Optical Speed Sensor used in combination with the PWM motor controller to produce the smoothest speed changes. The optical eye actually counts the revolutions of the motor directly at the axle…”I get just a little bit suspicious. If the review sounds a little too much like a treadmill brochure, take it with a grain of salt. (That doesn’t mean that the quality of the treadmill is bad or good, mind you. Just make sure you don’t base your decision on those reviews alone.)#3) Consider this: Flukes DO happen.Even the BEST treadmill manufacturers sometimes make a dud. Nobody has a 100% customer satisfaction rate ALL the time. And unfortunately, it’s usually those people that have had BAD experiences that leave nasty reviews of their treadmills. They have every right to do this of course. Hopefully the treadmill manufacturers read these reviews and do something about them. But keep in mind that one bad review doesn’t prove it’s a low quality brand just as one stellar review doesn’t prove it’s a high quality brand. The Bottom Line:Trust your own decision. If you’ve taken the time to research treadmills, chances are you know what makes a quality treadmill. Don’t let one person’s opinion ruin the fun of getting in shape with YOUR choice of home treadmill. Good luck and have fun!

Treadmills are expensive pieces of equipment with moving parts, so poor maintenance would cause more damage than it repairs. Every treadmill is designed differently and hence, for the best maintenance, it would be best to refer to the manual supplied with it.Even a simple thing like dust accumulation may be a deterrent for the smooth movement of the conveyor. About once a week, the treadmill should be dusted all over. Special attention must be paid to areas under the belt, and any accumulation there should be dusted off. There are several treadmill maintenance kits available in the market. They are mostly silicone-based. These kits may be used, after dusting, on moving parts such as the belt, the deck and the motor. A few drops of lubrication fluid through a convenient dropper help in maintaining lubrication in these parts of the machine and reduces the friction. But, a word of caution! Use these kits only if recommended by the manufacturers. Using the wrong type of liquid on a treadmill may make the belt too slippery, and make it lose its grip. There may be other problems these may create with the incline. Generally treadmill manufacturers also manufacture their own treadmill maintenance kits. Instead of using commercial kits, one can also use any other non-abrasive, non-acidic cleaner fluid with equal impact.Waxing the deck must be avoided unless specifically mentioned in the treadmill manual. Many treadmill manufacturers have their own coatings on the belt for grip. Waxing them may just make the surface gummier and make it lose its grip. There are little things that must be done regularly, like wiping the console and the handrails with a damp cloth, keeping the deck clean, etc. Do not use wet cloths on the console. As in any electronic device, grounding is necessary. An AC power supply with grounding would prevent the digital parts of the treadmill from crashing. A loss in the artificial intelligence of the treadmill may translate into loss of inclines and speeds, and may also render the treadmill totally dysfunctional. However heavy the treadmill may be, with time it moves a little. There may be changes in the belt, which may gradually move on one side. About once a month, the belt must be realigned with the center. Belt tracking is also done if the belt falls loose and begins to sag. But be careful that you do not tighten the belt too much. The treadmill itself may move over time and lose its level with the floor. This may cause squeaking noises while the belt is in motion. Adjust the treadmill regularly for its horizontality. These simple maintenance procedures can be done by the users themselves. It is not necessary to contract professionals for maintenance and pay their heavy bills. However, for more complicated things like a blown fuse or component replacement, it is best to approach the company.Treadmills provides detailed information about treadmills, treadmill reviews, best treadmills, used treadmills and more. Treadmills is the sister site of Big Muscles.

One expert loves Nordic Track; another expert wouldn’t touch it with a 10 foot pole. How are you supposed to make a smart decision with so many conflicting opinions? To help you out, here are the top 3 things to keep in mind when reading treadmill reviews:#1) Consider this: It’s just ONE PERSON’S opinion.People have different opinions on everything from movies to ice cream to cars to cities. Someone prefers Honda to General Motors. Another person prefers Dell over IBM.That doesn’t mean that one thing is necessarily better than another, it just means somebody has a preference for it.So just because you really want to buy a Landice and one person may not agree with you doesn’t make it a bad buy for you.Keeping an open mind is always a good thing and listening to other’s peoples’ reasoning behind their decision can help you with your purchase. But in the end it’s your choice and it’s YOUR opinion that matters.Just because somebody doesn’t like what you like, that doesn’t mean you are going to make a bad decision. And while I’m not making any accusations here, when a treadmill buyer writes something like:”Let’s look at the features of the ABC treadmill and see what they mean to you…”or”The XYZ treadmill offers an Optical Speed Sensor used in combination with the PWM motor controller to produce the smoothest speed changes. The optical eye actually counts the revolutions of the motor directly at the axle…”I get just a little bit suspicious. If the review sounds a little too much like a treadmill brochure, take it with a grain of salt.(That doesn’t mean that the quality of the treadmill is bad or good, mind you. If you’ve taken the time to research treadmills, chances are you know what makes a quality treadmill.Don’t let one person’s opinion ruin the fun of getting in shape with YOUR choice of home treadmill.

If you’re buying a treadmill, chances are you’ll want to research before you buy. Everyone wants to get the best deal for a discount price. They also want to find the best treadmill to suit their workout needs. So you’ll probably be interested in looking at various treadmill ratings or reviews. But why are there so many different ratings and which one is the most accurate? Here’s a few things most buyers don’t know about treadmill ratings. There are really 2 types of treadmill ratings:1) Consumer Ratings2) Expert RatingsUser Treadmill Ratings:Consumer treadmill ratings are done by the layperson who has bought and used the specific treadmill. Many websites allow anyone to go online and post a review of their treadmill. Customer reviews and ratings can be very valuable when searching for a treadmill – however keep in mind several things:#1) No treadmill has a 100% perfect track record. Even the BEST treadmill manufacturers sometimes make a dud. And it’s usually the people that have had BAD experiences that leave negative reviews of their treadmills, not the many that have had good experiences with the same treadmill. They have every right to do this and hopefully the treadmill manufacturers read these reviews and do something about them. Just remember that one bad review doesn’t prove it’s a low quality brand.#2) The treadmill industry is growing more competitive each year. And marketing is a huge portion of the treadmill industry since treadmill manufacturers KNOW you’re going to research treadmill ratings before you buy. So while I’m not making any accusations, I have read ‘customer reviews’ that are clearly NOT written by the average buyer. They sound like they’re written by somebody working for the competition – someone well versed in the art of sales psychology and who knows more about treadmills than the average person. Again, not making any accusations here – just keep this in mind when reading user ratings online.Rule of Thumb: Use common sense. If it sounds like it’s written by a treadmill salesperson, take the treadmill review with a grain of salt.Expert Treadmill Ratings:There are also expert treadmill ratings. These are the ratings written by the experts in the fitness industry. People like Consumer Reports, Runner’s World, Consumer Guide, Men’s Health, Prevention Magzine are just a few out there. These people rate and review various treadmills at various times in the year. While these ratings are much less likely to be tainted by biased reviewers, here are a few cautions to keep in mind while reading them:#1) Each rater has a different rating system and may rate treadmills on such factors as price, cushioning, stability, quietness, belt area, warranty, console, electronics, programs, incline and quality of parts. So while one reviewer may put more emphasis on cushioning the other may put more emphasis on warranty. It’s nothing to get confused over – just understand that different experts value different features. They’ll usually have an area where they list exactly how they rated the treadmills and which features they valued highly in their review.#2) Expert ratings also usually don’t have time to look at EVERY treadmill brand on the market. Nobody does. We’ve been reviewing treadmills for over 3 years and we still haven’t covered all the brands. So just because a certain brand isn’t in the ratings, doesn’t make it a poor quality brand. Try to find other reviews on a brand if you can’t find it in your favorite expert ratings list. One last thing: Many treadmill ratings are also based on comparison to other similarly priced treadmills on the market. So if you have a $1000 treadmill that gets 5 stars – that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s better than a $2000 treadmill that gets 4 stars. It means that compared to other $1000 treadmills it is one of the best values.By remembering these things when sifting through treadmill ratings, you’re less likely to be confused. And it will be easier to choose the best quality treadmill for your needs.
